AMMAN – His Majesty King Abdullah on Friday received a telephone call from US President Barack Obama during which the two leaders reviewed bilateral ties and Middle East peace efforts, according to a statement by the Royal Court.

The statement said Obama praised efforts by His Majesty King Abdullah to support regional stability and the cause of peace in the Middle East.

It added that the King briefed the US president on the outcome of Palestinian-Israeli meetings hosted by Jordan on Tuesday in the presence of representatives of the Middle East Quartet, comprising the US, the EU, Russia and the United Nations.

The King said talks he is scheduled to have with Obama in the middle of this month in Washington will constitute a chance to exchange views on the future of the Middle East peace process, regional developments and issues of concern to the two countries, the statement concluded.

Tuesday’s Palestinian-Israeli meetings in Amman were described as positive and a prelude to further talks, according to Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh.

Chief negotiator Saeb Erekat represented the Palestinian side, meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's envoy, Yitzhak Molcho.

The meetings were held in a “positive atmosphere and reflected the seriousness of both sides to reach substantive results”, Judeh said, adding that the two sides agreed to resume their talks in Amman.

Amman has for the past few months sought to break the stalemate in the peace process, Judeh added at a press conference following a series of meetings involving key players, including Middle East Quartet envoy Tony Blair and the Quartet members.
